Literally 'stinky oxygen' — 臭 (chòu, 'stinky') + 氧 (yǎng, 'oxygen'). Ozone really does have a sharp, distinctive smell, which is why early scientists named it from Greek 'ozein' (to smell) — Chinese kept the same logic.
