Uyghurs speak a Turkic language written in a Perso-Arabic script and traditionally follow Sunni Islam. Famous cultural exports include the Muqam music suites (UNESCO Intangible Heritage), naan bread, polo (a lamb-and-rice pilaf), and the grape-vine courtyards of Turpan.
history
The ethnonym 维吾尔 (Uyghur) is a modern transcription — historically the same people were called 回鹘 or 回纥 in Chinese records going back to the Tang dynasty Uyghur Khaganate.
