The slogan 科学技术是第一生产力 ("Science and technology are the primary productive force") was famously declared by Deng Xiaoping (邓小平) in 1988 and remains one of the most quoted lines of post-Reform-era policy. The compound is almost always shortened to 科技 (kējì) in modern usage — 科技公司 tech company, 科技园 tech park, 科技日报 Science and Technology Daily.
usage
Note 科学 (kēxué, science) is from Japanese 科学 (kagaku), borrowed back into Chinese in the late 19th century, while 技术 (jìshù, technology/skill) is native classical.
