科举 ran from the Sui dynasty (605 CE) until 1905. It selected officials by written exam on Confucian classics, in principle allowing commoners to rise through merit.
usage
Often appears in 科举制度 (the keju system) and 科举考试 (imperial exam). Modern 高考 is sometimes called the 'modern 科举' in journalism.
