history
Born Saloth Sar (1925-1998). His Khmer Rouge regime emptied Phnom Penh, abolished currency and schools, and forced the urban population into rural labor camps. The 1975-79 genocide killed an estimated 1.5-2 million Cambodians (about a quarter of the population) before Vietnam invaded and ended his rule. He died under house arrest by his own former comrades in 1998, never tried in court.
