culture
The whole poem: 烟笼寒水月笼沙,夜泊秦淮近酒家。商女不知亡国恨,隔江犹唱后庭花。 'Mist veils the cold water, moonlight veils the sand; I moor by night on the Qinhuai, near the taverns. The singing girls, who know nothing of the grief of a fallen state, still sing Flowers of the Rear Court across the river.'
history
Flowers of the Rear Court, 玉树后庭花, was a song of 陈后主, the last ruler of the Chen dynasty, who was feasting with his consorts when the Sui army took Nanjing in 589. Hearing it sung beside the river, the poet sees the Tang court heading the same way.
