正雄

正雄 read in Mandarin as Zhèngxióng but representing the Japanese male name Masao - 正 (read 'masa', meaning 'correct / upright') + 雄 (read 'o', meaning 'male / hero'). A solidly traditional name, particularly common in men born during the Showa era (1926-1989).

When Japanese personal names appear in Chinese text, the kanji are kept intact and read with Mandarin pinyin - so a Chinese reader sees 正雄 and thinks Zhèngxióng, even though the bearer would respond to 'Masao.' Same convention applies to all Japanese names written in kanji: 山本 = Shānběn (not Yamamoto).
