The Cultural Revolution (1966-1976) was launched by Mao Zedong to reassert his authority and purge 'bourgeois' elements from Chinese society. It closed schools and universities, sent urban youth to the countryside (上山下乡), and caused widespread social and economic disruption until Mao's death in 1976.
