history

The name 归绥 was created in 1913 by merging 归化城 (Guīhuàchéng — Mongol Köke khota / 'blue city', founded 1581) with the nearby Qing garrison town 绥远城. The PRC renamed it back to its Mongolian form 呼和浩特 (Hohhot) in 1954.
