Tacheng (also called Tarbagatay, from the Mongolian name) sits on the Kazakh border in northern Xinjiang. The prefecture seat is Tacheng City; the region has historically had Russian, Kazakh, Uyghur, Mongol, and Han populations and was a key 19th-century Sino-Russian trade post.
