In ancient times grain was stored in round bins, called 囷, and square ones, called 仓.

history
囷 is not used in modern Chinese. It draws grain 禾 enclosed in a round bin 囗 — a circular granary, contrasted in old texts with the square 仓. It also acts as the phonetic in 菌 and 麇.
register
Classical only — confined to old agricultural texts and etymology, not modern usage.
The big enclosure 囗 wraps around, picturing the round wall of the grain bin. Its strokes split around the inner glyph: the top and left go first, the closing bottom stroke comes last.
