Endemic to Taiwan and voted in 2007 the island's national bird (a popular online vote organized by the Taiwan International Birding Association). Locally nicknamed
长尾山娘 (chángwěi shānniáng, 'long-tailed mountain lady') for its trailing blue tail feathers. Highly social, intelligent, and known to mob intruders that come near its nest.
