Taiwan's least-developed and most scenic eastern county — sparsely populated, with a high proportion of indigenous Austronesian peoples (
阿美族,
卑南族,
排湾族 and others). The southernmost stop on Taiwan's east-coast railway line from Hualien, and the jumping-off point for
绿岛 (Green Island) and
兰屿 (Orchid Island).
