history

双休 only became the national standard in 1995, when the State Council reduced the workweek from 48 to 40 hours. Before that, Saturday was a normal workday. The shortening 双休 (short for 双休日) is still the default baseline on Chinese job postings, contrasted against 单休 or 大小周.
