Tips

history
韩愈 argues that the Way of the ancient sages passed down to 孔子 and 孟子 and was then lost, and that Buddhist monks and Daoist recluses live off society while rejecting its duties. Its line of transmission of the Way became central to later Neo-Confucian thought.
usage
原 is a verb here, "to trace to the source", so the title means "tracing the Way to its origin". The first chapter of the 《淮南子》 has a similar title, 《原道训》.
