history
Runs from the Eastern Jin's collapse to Sui reunification in 589. The south saw four short-lived Han-Chinese dynasties (Song, Qi, Liang, Chen) at Jiankang; the north was ruled by Xianbei and other steppe peoples, most notably the Northern Wei (). Much of the Longmen and Yungang Buddhist carving was done here.
