The Ballad of Mulan (《木兰辞》) dates to the Northern Dynasties — 'Khan' (可汗) appears in the original because the ruler was a steppe-origin Xianbei emperor, not a Han Chinese one. Emperor Xiaowen of Northern Wei famously forced his court to adopt Chinese surnames and clothing.
