Official PRC-era term for the 1959-1961 famine, blaming weather and 'natural disasters'. Modern historians overwhelmingly attribute the catastrophe to the Great Leap Forward's policies (backyard steel, inflated yield reports, continued grain procurement despite real shortages). More neutral Chinese term today: 三年困难时期 'the three difficult years'.
