June 18 marks the founding anniversary of 京东 (JD.com), set up by Liu Qiangdong on 18 June 1998. JD turned its birthday into an annual sales event around 2010, and as Tmall scaled up 双11 in November, 618 became the natural mid-year counterpart. Now Taobao, Pinduoduo, Douyin and every other major platform participate.
