Tips

history
The 《孟子》 defines them: an old man without a wife is 鳏, an old woman without a husband 寡, an old person without children 独, and a child without a father 孤. These are the poorest people under heaven, with no one to turn to. So 孤独 here is two kinds of people, not the word 孤独 "lonely".
