An old variant, not used in modern Chinese. The standard form is 斗 (traditional 鬥), to fight, as in 搏斗 and 斗争; it differs from the variant 鬬 only in inner detail.

The wrapping 鬥 is the fight radical - two warriors grappling - and carries the whole meaning; its strokes open the character and close it after the inside is written. Modern Chinese reduced this to 斗.
