Premier then Party chief, Zhao visited student hunger-strikers at Tiananmen on 19 May 1989 and told them through a loudspeaker 我们来得太晚了 ('We've come too late') - his last public appearance. Spent the next 15 years under house arrest in Beijing; his name is still censored inside mainland China.
