Formal / legal term. 自治 (zìzhì, self-rule) + 权 (quán, right) — the legal right to govern one's own affairs. Used for ethnic autonomous regions in China (新疆维吾尔自治区, 西藏自治区, etc.), but also for universities, religious bodies, and local councils.
