Futian is Shenzhen's central business district — home to the municipal government, the Shenzhen Stock Exchange, and 平安金融中心 (Ping An Finance Center, one of China's tallest buildings). 福田口岸 is a major crossing point into Hong Kong.

The name 福田 ('field of blessings') is a Buddhist term meaning a field in which good karma can be sown. Despite the poetic origin, the modern district is one of the most densely built-up financial zones in China.
