Pazhou was historically called
黄埔 (Whampoa) — the Pearl River anchorage where foreign trading ships stopped during the Qing Canton System (c. 1760-1842) before goods were ferried upriver to the Thirteen Factories. Today the same island hosts the Canton Fair (
广交会), China's biggest trade expo, founded 1957.
