The word is best known from the saying 橘生淮南则为橘，生于淮北则为枳: an orange tree grown south of the Huai gives sweet 橘, but planted north of it gives the sour 枳. Yanzi used it to argue that people are shaped by where they live.
usage
The city is formally 淮北市, a coal-mining city in the far north of Anhui. 淮南 is a different city, farther south in the same province.
