Facing threats yet holding to principle — this is what is called a great man.
Tips
history
From 《孟子·滕文公下》 (Mencius 3B.2): 富贵不能淫,贫贱不能移,威武不能屈,此之谓大丈夫 — 'Riches and rank cannot corrupt him; poverty and meanness cannot move him; force and power cannot bend him — this is what is called a great man.' Mencius's most famous definition of moral manhood, still quoted in Chinese politics and education.
usage
The line is the punchline of the three-clause definition, almost always quoted with its setup. 此之谓 is classical word-order for 谓此 ('call this'), with 之 as a particle inverting object-verb.
