Jeanne Bécu, comtesse du Barry (1743–1793), was the last maîtresse-en-titre of Louis XV. Her rise from working-class origins to Versailles, her bitter rivalry with Marie Antoinette, and her execution by guillotine in 1793 made her one of the most dramatized figures of the Ancien Régime.
