JAXA's official nickname for the SELENE mission was Kaguya (かぐや) after Princess Kaguya, the moon-born heroine of the 10th-century Tale of the Bamboo Cutter (《竹取物语》). The Chinese rendering 月亮女神号 ('Moon Goddess') captures that naming. The probe operated 2007–2009, ending in a controlled crash on the lunar surface.
