Jinzhong ("central Jin") sits in the heart of Shanxi and includes the UNESCO-listed Pingyao Ancient City and the Qiao Family Compound 乔家大院 made famous by Zhang Yimou's "Raise the Red Lantern". Historical heartland of the Jin merchants 晋商 whose Qing-era draft banks 票号 were the ancestors of modern Chinese banking.
