Tips

history
胡适 published it in 《新青年》 in January 1917, while he was still a student in the United States. Its eight points include: say something real, do not imitate the ancients, avoid stock phrases, do not use allusions and do not shun colloquial words. 陈独秀 replied the next month with the bolder 《文学革命论》.
usage
刍议 "a grass-cutter's opinion" is a humble way to say "my modest proposals", so the title is far meeker than the essay's effect, which helped make 白话文 the standard written language.
