The Cultural Revolution (1966-1976) was a period of political turmoil launched by Mao Zedong. Schools and universities were closed for long periods, and urban youth were sent to live and work in the countryside (上山下乡). It ended in 1976 with the arrest of the 四人帮 (Gang of Four).
