Literary/classical. In modern writing it almost only appears in compounds: 摈弃 (bìnqì) 'to discard,' 摈除 (bìnchú) 'to get rid of,' 摈斥 (bìnchì) 'to reject.' Avoid using the bare character on its own outside formal or literary text.
