Zhang Pu founded the
复社 (Fùshè, 'Restoration Society') in 1629, a Confucian literary fellowship that grew to thousands of members and became politically influential in opposing the eunuch faction at court. He is famous as a young man for legendary diligence — said to have copied each text he studied seven times before he understood it (
七录斋, 'Studio of Seven Copyings', is his studio name). His most-read essay today is
五人墓碑记, taught in Chinese high schools.
