He could recall Cao Cao's military writings after one reading. In the novel he claims 《孟德新书》 is an anonymous Warring States text, and Cao, fearing the ancients had beaten him to it, has the book torn up and burned.

The plot was betrayed by his own elder brother 张肃, a commandery governor who reported him to 刘璋 for fear of being dragged down with him. Liu Bei, hearing of the execution, is said to have cried that Zhang Su had killed his inside man.
