建军节 on 1 August marks the 南昌起义 of 1927, counted as the founding of the PLA, which is why the army's emblem carries 八一. From the 1950s to the 1970s 建军 was also a favourite given name for boys, alongside 建国 'build the nation' and 建华 'build China': 李建军 sounds like a whole generation.
