Ming painter from Jiangxia, today's Wuhan, and a leading master of the Zhe school, known for fast, bold brushwork in figures and landscapes. An emperor gave him a seal reading 画状元, "top scholar of painting".
His art name 小仙 'little immortal' came from a Nanjing duke who was amazed by his painting when Wu was 17; Wu prized it above the emperor's seal and signed his paintings with it. He was also known as a heavy drinker.
