The case was a turning point for China's #MeToo discussion and for state treatment of celebrities: brand partners cut ties within days in July 2021, and 吴亦凡 became the reference point in later state campaigns against 'misbehaving artists' (失德艺人).
Born 1990 in Guangzhou, raised partly in Vancouver. Debuted with SM Entertainment's EXO in 2012 as part of the Chinese sub-unit EXO-M; left the group in 2014 and returned to China as a solo artist and actor. In July 2021 he was detained by Beijing police after allegations by Du Meizhu (都美竹). In November 2022 the Beijing Chaoyang District Court sentenced him to 13 years in prison for rape and for 'gathering a crowd to engage in sexual promiscuity,' plus deportation upon release.
