Michael Cimino (1939–2016) won the Academy Award for Best Director for The Deer Hunter (1978). His follow-up film Heaven's Gate (1980) was a catastrophic box-office failure that nearly bankrupted United Artists and reshaped Hollywood's approach to director autonomy.
