Built from the Latin/Greek prefix 'para-' (
副 fù = 'auxiliary/secondary') + 'myxo-' (
黏液 niányè = 'mucus') + 'virus' (
病毒 bìngdú). So the Chinese is essentially a one-to-one calque of paramyxovirus. The family name comes from the viruses' affinity for mucous membranes.
