Used in 雾凇 (rime), the feathery ice that forms when supercooled fog freezes onto branches. The 雾凇 of Jilin on the 松花江 (Songhua River) is one of China's celebrated winter sights.
The right side 松 'pine' supplies the sound sōng directly and unchanged. It is also a handy mnemonic: rime often forms most beautifully on 松 pine branches.
