Mostly a technical / descriptive word — used in materials, architecture, and product specs (中空玻璃 hollow glass, 中空纤维 hollow fiber, 中空轮胎 hollow tire). For the everyday "empty" feeling, use 空 alone or 空心 (kōngxīn).
