Tips

history
杜牧 wrote it in 825, aged 23, as a veiled warning to the young Emperor Jingzong of Tang about his building and pleasures. It pictures the vast palace, its burning by 项羽 and the swift fall of the Qin. 勾心斗角 'scheming against each other' started here as a description of the palace's interlocking eaves and beams.
mistakes
Read 阿 as ē, not ā, and 房 by tradition as páng: 阿房宫. The reading Ēfánggōng is also heard.
