Founded by Ardashir I in 224 CE and overthrown by the Arab conquest in 651 CE, the Sassanids were the last great pre-Islamic Persian empire and a constant rival of the Roman/Byzantine empire. After the fall, the last crown prince Peroz III famously fled east and sought refuge at the Tang court in Chang'an.
