Archaic, hierarchical — appears almost exclusively in historical dramas, period novels, and old correspondence. 禀 (bǐng) means 'to report respectfully to a superior'; pairing it with 复 (fù, 'reply / return') gives 'send back a respectful report.' Modern equivalent: 回报.
