皇位 specifically denotes the Chinese imperial throne (and by extension other emperors — Roman, Japanese). For European/British kings the standard term is
王位 (wángwèi) — distinguishing emperor (
皇) from king (
王) is important: imperial China had only one
皇帝 at a time, but several
王 below him.
