Launched around 1915 when Chen Duxiu (陈独秀) founded the magazine 《青年》 (New Youth). Its slogans were 民主 and 科学 — nicknamed 先生 (Mr. Democracy) and 先生 (Mr. Science). The movement pushed vernacular writing (白话文), women's rights, and radical critique of Confucianism, and paved the way for the May Fourth Movement of 1919.
