Launched around 1915 when Chen Duxiu (
陈独秀) founded the magazine 《
新青年》 (New Youth). Its slogans were
民主 and
科学 — nicknamed
德先生 (Mr. Democracy) and
赛先生 (Mr. Science). The movement pushed vernacular writing (
白话文), women's rights, and radical critique of Confucianism, and paved the way for the May Fourth Movement of 1919.
