鸣锣开道 ('striking gongs to clear the way') was the literal scene in imperial China: gong-bearers walked ahead of an official's sedan chair, beating gongs so commoners would step aside. The phrase now sneers at officials demanding undue deference, or, neutrally, at preparing the ground for something.
