Kangxi took the throne at seven, personally crushed the Three Feudatories revolt, incorporated Taiwan in 1683, and negotiated the 1689 Treaty of Nerchinsk with Russia — the first treaty China signed with a European power on roughly equal terms.

The '康熙字典' (Kangxi Dictionary, 1716) became the standard Chinese dictionary for two centuries and still provides the radical-and-stroke system used to index traditional-character dictionaries today. Kangxi is also the name of Taiwan's long-running celebrity talk show 康熙.
