history
客家 means 'guest families': their ancestors moved south from the north China plain in waves from the 4th century on and settled in the hills, where earlier settlers called them guests. They are Han Chinese, not an ethnic minority. Well-known Hakka include 孙中山 and Singapore's 李光耀.
usage
Mostly used before another noun: 客家人 'Hakka people', 客家话 'the Hakka language', 客家菜 'Hakka cooking', with dishes such as salt-baked chicken, 盐焗鸡.
